Meeting/Event Information

Illinois Chapter usually meets once each month, August through June, on Tuesdays. The Chapter’s annual golf outing and fund raiser always takes place in September. Generally 70 to 80 members gather at monthly meetings, which makes them an excellent networking opportunity for members interested in meeting and developing other contacts in the industry.

The State of Illinois requires professional engineers to complete 30 PDHs (Professional Development Hours) of training for license renewal. The Illinois Chapter ASHRAE offers educational programs with more than enough PDHs to help engineers satisfy this requirement.

Presentations from previous Chapter seminars and meetings may be downloaded after logging into the "Member Area." The Illinois Chapter of ASHRAE stores past presentations. You must be a member to access them from this website. If you are not yet a member, sign-up today or contact us for more information.

Electrical Guidelines for the HVAC&R Design M.E.s

At the Feb. 12 Illinois Chapter meeting we'll turn the spotlight on the electrical side of HVAC&R system design, talking about important considerations mechanical engineers should recognize and understand. Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) specifically will also be addressed.

The afternoon seminar, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. (registration desk opens at 2:30 p.m.), will include two presentations. Bob Trivedi,  Elara Engineering, will cover information that mechanical engineers should know to coordinate with electrical engineers on new and retrofit projects. The mechanical and electrical design team needs to work in a parallel fashion for a timely delivery of the project. Bob's presentation will provide a framework for gaining effective and professional results. Bob is a senior mechanical engineer at Elara who has an extensive background in electrical design.

John Willis, president of John R. Willis, Inc., has 25 years of experience in both sales and installation of electric motors and variable frequency drives. In his presentation, he will provide direction on the use of shaft grounding rings to ameliorate the stray currents that VFDs can generate in electrical motors.

The regular social hour and dinner meeting will follow the seminar. During the business portion of the meeting, Tad Hofkin, Research Promotion Chair, will briefly update us on ASHRAE's Research Program and the Chapter's goal this year. Following Dinner, Dan Watkins, LEED AP, will give a presentation about the construction, design and application of Variable Frequency Drives in HVAC systems. Dan is a Sales Engineer with Bornquist, Inc., in the Chicago area. A graduate in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois-Chicago, Dan has been with Bornquist for more than 10 years. He is active both in the local chapters of ASHRAE and the USGBC.
