Focus on Healthcare Application

April 9 Meeting To Explore Novel Air Purification Methods

We’re heading to Bub City in Rosemont on Tuesday, April 9, for our next monthly meeting. We are excited to be meeting here for the first time. We’re also excited about our planned presentation and featured speaker. Our technical session, "Active Capture and Control of Micro-particles and Pathogens," will review the public health, clinical, and financial implications of particulate air pollution. It will examine the impact of ultra-small particles on respiratory and mental illness, and will review methods that can be used to mitigate the healthcare risks in the industrial, commercial, residential, and healthcare space.

Our guest speaker will be Mark H. Ereth, MD, MA, Emeritus Professor of Anesthesiology, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Find out more online and sign up to join us for what promises to be a very informative and fun evening on April 9.

Rebuilding Together Call For Volunteers

Illinois ASHRAE will again sponsor a home on the upcoming Rebuilding Together Day scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2019. Our team of volunteers has been assigned to work on a home in the Englewood neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. While painting, cleaning and repairing or installing new equipment are usual chores, a final task list will be revealed closer to the date.

The annual Rebuilding Together Day gives Illinois ASHRAE members a way to bring comfort and safety into homes that really need our help. Volunteers also have fun while getting to know other members. Friends and family of ASHRAE are welcome to join! If you’d like to volunteer on April 27, please visit and sign up before April 20. Registration is free, and all volunteers will receive a 2019 Rebuilding Together t-shirt.

Inside Illinois Chapter

Women in ASHRAE Reassemble

The presentation by ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Dr. Julia Keen at the January 8th membership meeting identified some of the challenges and opportunities the high number of women in the profession today bring to engineering firms. The event served to formally kick-off the reconvening of the Women in ASHRAE committee within the Illinois Chapter, following a Society-wide initiative to bring the group back to life. Fiona Martin, serving as interim chair for the committee, organized a planning breakfast meeting in February that was attended by 25 women in River North. “Great ideas and feedback were generated,” Fiona said. Future meetings will be scheduled in April and June. For information, write Fiona Martin McCarthy at [email protected].

Celebrating Engineers and Engineering

Capping off annual National Engineers Week (EWeek), celebrated each February as a time also to introduce young people to the profession, was the Washington Awards Banquet. Coincidentally, the large gathering of local and regional dignitaries, professionals and students was also held on Friday, February 22nd — the birthdate of our nation’s founder. Among the gathering this year at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, were Illinois ASHRAE Treasurer Patrick Krause with wife Betty, Student Activity Chair Kevin Summers, and Kelly Majewski.

Love for STEM Exhibited at Science Fair

The Non-Public School Science Fair in early March again gave Chicago-area primary and secondary students the opportunity to share their passion with others and put their science skills on display in hundreds of exhibits inside Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. Helping judge their projects and present awards for the best, on March 2nd, were Illinois ASHRAE members Frank Moccio, David Lippe and Sumayyah Theron.

Worth Noting

Chapter Members Named ASHRAE Tech Award Winners

Congratulations to David Eldridge, Jr. and John Tsingas, Grumman/Butkus Associates, among the First Place Technology Award winners named recently by ASHRAE. Their project, 801 Grand, described an energy assessment, modeling and reduction study and design changes that led to both significant IAQ improvements and a nearly 28% annual energy use reduction saving building owners more than $400,000 a year. Their work for the 44-story office building in Des Moines, Iowa, earlier won an Illinois ASHRAE Excellence in Engineering Award in 2017-18. Download a flyer for more project details and watch for upcoming coverage of the project in issues of ASHRAE Journal and High Performing Building magazine.

ASHRAE Society Update

ASHRAE Launches Certified HVAC Designer (CHD)

ASHRAE has announced that applications for the new Certified HVAC Designer (CHD) certification are now open. World-wide computer-based testing opens June 3. “We’re confident this is an investment from which ASHRAE members and their employees will benefit,” said Mark Fly, P.E., chair of the exam subcommittee.

The CHD exam blueprint and eligibility requirements, which have been approved by the ASHRAE Certification Committee, can be found in the CHD Candidate Guidebook. ASHRAE History

This Date in ASHRAE History
Mysterious New Legionnaires Gets a First Look

The world may have waited almost 40 years for an ASHRAE standard for the mysterious, infectious Legionnaires Disease, but Illinois Chapter members didn’t wait that long to devote a monthly meeting to the topic, as indicated by this March 14, 1988 meeting notice found in the monthly newsletter. Legionnaires Disease was first identified in 1976 following an American Legion convention in Philadelphia. While a vaccination does not exist, today there’s much more knowledge about the disease’s cause and prevention through good air and water system maintenance.
